31 Days of RiRi: Please Don’t Stop The Music- Day 16
“I wanna take you away, let’s escape into the music, DJ let it play…” Hey y’all!! I was just enjoying Rih’s throwback song Please Don’t Stop The Music, yet another one it Rih’s mid 2000s hit streak. When released in 2007, it peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on Billboard Dance Club Songs and has been certified 4 times platinum selling 3.7 million copies to date, in the U.S alone and was nominated for a Grammy. This track also recieved much international success too.
I remember when it came out, I probably listened to it 6-8 times a day, and you couldn’t listen to a pop music station for more than an hour without the song being played. And I can only imagine how many times this club banger was spun by DJ’s. We all know the chorus, because it samples the “Mama-say, mama-sa, ma-ma-kossa” line from Micheal Jacksons famous “Wanna Be Starting Something.” This sample is what gave the song that extra umph, the it factor to become a hit. I think it was a great move to use that line in the song because just from that she instantly made the song appeal to a larger audience and introduced herself to an audience that may have otherwise never checked for Rihanna. I was only 7 or 8 at the time this song was popping but I do know that it is because of this song that I wanted to learn all about sampling and producing and things surrounding that. I’d already known that the hook was from a MJ song and I was really curious as how to it became apart of Rihanna’s song. I love this song personally, it’s a get up and dance feel good song that had everyone wanting to make their way over to their favorite place and it was because of this song that my interest in music had moved beyond just listening.
