As a lover of music, I find myself in search for new, undiscovered artists, or just artists that are underrated in the music world. Here is my list of five female R&B artists that people may already listen to, but not enough. These are all for my first time listeners 🙂

Jhene Aiko

Although people pop out to Sativa ft. Rae Sremmurd like their life depends on it, Jhene Aiko is one of the most underrated R&B/pop singers in the music industry today. In the year 2013, she was known for her Grammy nominated song “The Worst,” and in 2014 became known for her iconic verse in “Post To Be,” but many people don’t necessarily take time to listen to the music she makes that doesn’t make it as a single. In her album Trip–the story of her life after the death of her brother Miyagi in 2012–she takes you on a relatable road of her story of drug addiction, depression, and the power of love.

Yuna

Yuna, especially known for her 2016 song “Crush” featuring Usher, is a Malaysian music artist and songwriter who actually has a collab with Jhene Aiko called “Used To Love You.” Yuna’s voice takes you on a calm voyage. Her genres include, adult album alternative, acoustic music, folk rock, contemporary R&B, soul music, and indie pop.

Alina Baraz

Alina Baraz is most known for her song “Electric” (featuring Khalid), but even that song is very underrated. As a girl in her early 20’s, she takes you on a journey of “Chill R&B” that taps into the vast frequencies of your mind. Two songs recommended for a first listener would be “Can I” and “Unfold,” which are both on her 2015 EP, Urban Flora – an album featuring Galimatias.

Sevyn Streeter

An artist best known as a feature to Chris Brown’s 2013 hit, “It Wont Stop,” is raging with singing talent. This American singer and songwriter writes heart wrenching and calming love music, along with R&B bops that you won’t be able to get out of your head after listening to them. After listening to Before I do continue down her 2017 album, Girl Disrupted. You won’t be disappointed.

Tori Kelly

Victoria Loren Kelly, a powerhouse vocalist and pop sensation, has been seen in and out of the music realm since auditioning for “American Idol” in 2009 and getting rejected by Simon Cowell. She is most known for her amazing riffs and runs and continues to have a healthy voice, sings with morale, and keeps her private life private. Her highest charting song was “Should’ve Been Us,” and you know with both Jamaican and Puerto Rican, she doesn’t come too far from her soul side. Give her 2015 album Unbreakable Smile a listen and while you’re at it, watch her Nationwide commercial on television. Even though she hasn’t dropped a single in a while, you can’t stop her from singing.
