“Don’t give up. Do it. Don’t let anybody discourage you. Say that, ‘I’m going to do it,’ and do it for yourself.”

For everyone who feels like school is too hard, you feel like giving up every other day, or your goals are out of your reach, take some advice from Doreetha Daniels. At 99 years old, Daniels has lived through the Great Depression, World War II, the Civil Rights movement, the moon landing and the rise of the Digital Age.

Graduating from College of the Canyons (COC) in Santa Clarita, Calif., with an associate degree in social sciences last week, Daniels can now add one more historical event to her life: Accomplishing her own personal goal of earning a college degree before turning 100.

She is the oldest graduate in the university’s history.

Her journey, which started in spring 2009, was far from easy, with personal difficulties including multiple strokes to sight and hearing issues to the revocation of her driver’s license. Daniels, like majority of younger college students, also battled to keep up in intensive subjects such as college-level math and statistics.
