IMG_0653As an awkward black girl myself Issa Rae’s Insecure is probably my favorite show on television right now.

As we near the end of this season, it feels like it just began because something in every episode always relates to my life. Somehow, someway. Issa plays character named after herself, Issa Dee. Issa Dee is all of us when stuff aint going our way. Kind of fresh out of an ongoing turmoil endured relationship full of what seemed like more downs than ups. After 5 long years sticking by his side she finally decides to be a little too selfish and it ends up in a very emotional break up. Months later  she now faces a dreaded rent increase, no car due to her sexting and driving, her “single life” ain’t going right, and her ex walks in with another woman….that happens to be an
An other being not a black woman. What we call in my world a double wammy has Issa tettering on the edge. The last scene we saw was her tearing up her entire apartment. Flipping tables, kicking chairs, pushing all of her personal belongings on the floor, all while screaming, growling and crying.

“It’s an inner fight mixed with a form of depression. When a person can’t handle life they often choose self infliction momentarily.” @lovelyonehun

@lovelyonehun I have to believe you are absolutely correct. Thats the short version of an adult tantrum. We’re all grown children anyway so tantrums arent far or few between in this process of maturation. When life starts to show us that we aren’t making the right choices, we shut down. As we get older, this adult life only gets harder and we began to realize just how ill prepared we actually are. Personally, I started to soften up to people I was very hard on when I wasn’t in their position in life.At almost 27 years of age I applaud single parents, college students who aren’t fresh out of high school but pushing through because it’s essential for the best outcome in their desired career, entrepreneurs and the like.

Life. Is. Hard.

The worst part about is when we make the wrong decision we have to not only dust ourselves off, we have to muster up the courage to ask someone for their advice on how to avoid that pain. Trust that they told us correctly and then fight that same fight with better execution. Trial and error is the hardest thing to wrap your mind around. But it is when you have hit the wall so hard that it sits you on you behind that you start to suit up better. Watching Issa go through these different life changes is all of us at her age. Late 20’s to 30’s at a job we really would rather not get up and go to everyday and deal with people we are trying our damndest to not be like. Trying to learn ourselves, what we like, what we don’t like. What we want to stand for, what we want to represent when people who’s opinions we shouldn’t care about look at us, and still learning to remain genuine to the person we feel like we are today. It’s all so hard and when the pain from these life taught lessons are self inflicted we don’t know how to take it.

If you’re anything like me you shut down. I get to a point when I feel like life is kicking me just too hard where I don’t want to talk, eat, speak, nothing. But then I have to find something positive about my own struggle. Pray about it first and then reach out to those I know care for me and my well being. Those that have been in my shoes and know what the light at the end of the tunnel looks like. I do my best to laugh it off because at the end of the day, just like everything else, pain is temporary and small victories are still victories. I hope we get to see Issa come to that realization this Sunday at 11 pm on HBO.
