Chance the Rapper has constantly spoken to those of us that want to be artists about the dysfunction that lies within the “recording companies”. He made it his business to go on all major platforms including his shows and exploit them just like they plan to do you as an artist if you don’t know any better. It’s sad to see great talent be ignorant to the cost of their dreams. The labels know when you’re not smart or when you don’t really have the smartest people representing you. They take full advantage.

Each new rising star that hits the airwaves, whether radio or television, always expressed how difficult it is to get your song played on the radio. Old artist used to tell us all the struggle they had to endure to get your video on 106 & Park. MTV &VH1 had a very high standard for what they would and would not play. So now that streaming music from platforms like Spotify and SoundCloud has become popular it’s not only a full project to get play on the radio it’s like pulling teeth to see revenue.

Artists like Dave East, Cardi B, Charlie Pugh, and Tori Kelly are forced to put out tons of free music before anyone even recognizes the talents they bring to an industry that is over populated and rather watered down. I don’t knock anyone’s hustle but as an aspiring artist myself I feel strongly about those that get the chance to “make it” and all they have to sacrifice for the chance to live their dream.

These are people who are just excited to get the opportunity to live their best lives but without the backing of one of these record companies they often times won’t go far. And if they do, they risk their dignity, sanity, morals and self respect. These big companies are in full understanding of such but they get paid either way so they don’t care much. NBA Youngboy, a hot new artist is the newest to fall victim. After learning that he is 17 years old with 3 children I later realized he’s not the brightest crayon in the box. But those he keeps close aren’t either. “Youngboy’s attorney, James Manasseh, revealed news of the rapper’s deal (with Atlantic. 5 albums for $2 million) on Thursday following the rapper’s court hearing for his aggravated assault charge.

Manasseh said outside the courtroom that Youngboy has a contract with Atlantic Records for five albums. He has delivered one so far under the contract – the rapper’s second album of his career. We presume that project to be “AI Youngboy.” That is highway robbery and modern slavery. He isn’t the first one the industry will chew up and spit out and for sure won’t be the last.

Do your research people. I have a dream as big as M.L.K, but it’s important to know the facts.

With Love,

Storie Stone
