John H. Johnson founded Ebony Magazine in 1945. It was the first black-oriented magazine in the United States to attain national circulation.

The Chicago native owned Johnson Publishing Company and it has been publishing since 1943. Johnson had created Negro-Digest in 1942 and then later created Ebony Magazine. He is also responsible for publishing Jet Magazine as well.

During the time of when Ebony was created was a time when racism and segregation was very prominent in the Unites States. Ebony Magazine provided us with a voice. It was so important for African Americans to be able to relate to something.

Ebony Magazine addressed African-American issues, personalities and interests in a positive and self-affirming manner. It was also one of few reliable sources that covered the Civil Rights Movement as it unfolded across the United States.

Prominent public figures, politicians, entertainers, actors, and athletes graced the cover. It was so important to provide African Americans with a magazine that they could relate to.

Ebony Magazine has since updated, but they have been running strong for 71 years and I wish them 100 more!

I am a 25 year old from 219, Indiana. I love shopping for pieces that are different and that I know nobody else will have! But one thing I hate about shopping is going broke doing so. Throughout the years of me working in retail, I have picked up a lot of tips and tricks for saving LOTS of money when shopping. I also go against trends by Vintage shopping. I find pieces that I can pair together to create works of art. You can call me a penny pincher, but I'll look BOMB while pinching my pennies :)
