Misty Copeland: Coming To A TV Near You!
Misty Copeland, second African American soloist in the American Ballet Theatre, will be pirouetting to a smaller screen near you. In a new docu series produced by Oxygen titled, The Misty Copeland Project, Copeland will be mentoring aspiring dancers as they chase their dreams in New York. Copeland, herself, is a good role model for someone who doesn’t quit and follows their dreams.
Contrary to the typical start of a ballet dancer, Copeland did not start her first ballet class until the age of 13, when other kids started around age of 7. Within three months, she was dancing en pointe. Other than starting ballet at an older age, Copeland was often criticized because of her build describing it, “is what a dancer’s shouldn’t be, with breasts and muscle and bulky legs” (from people.com). Despite these criticisms, Copeland has continued on to star in productions such as Firebird in The Firebird, Gamzatti in Bayadere and Princess Florine in Beauty as well as many more. Besides dancing in these amazing productions, Copeland has quite the resume. Copeland has not only danced for Prince and published a memoir Life in Motion: An Unlikely Ballerina, but is a sponsored athlete for Under Amour and currently stars in the women focused ad I WILL WHAT I WANT.
Copeland has come a long way since facing adversity and the only way she can go is up. True Star will definitely keep you posted on the upcoming The Misty Copeland Project.
