NFL: San Diego Chargers at Arizona Cardinals

Arizona Cardinals Jonathan Dwyer was arrested and charged this week with aggravated assault. It was unexpected that the Cardinals would act more quickly to discipline Dwyer than other teams handling domestic violence incidents with their own players. The Cardinals didn’t even wait for formal charges to be filed, or for the NFL to respond first.

According to a police report the first incident began at about 8 a.m. on July 21 when Dwyer and his wife got into a verbal argument at their apartment. The argument got physical when the wife refused to have sex with him, which he then head-butted his wife, fracturing her nose. The victim then fled with her son, but returned soon after the running back text a picture of a knife threatening to commit suicide. On July 22, the next day, another incident occurred where he struck the wife and their 17-month-old son. The second incident was reported after the victim left the state.

Dwyler was charged with 2 counts of aggravated assault after denying any physical assault. He spent a night in jail and made a brief court appearance before being released on $25,000 bail early Thursday. This comes in light of three other domestic violence incidents involving NFL players that led to them being taken off the field. Hopefully the NFL will take the White House’s advice and “get a handle on domestic violence”.
