Not quite sure if the world had caught on to the wave just yet, but today is the day that I begin to believe R&B is still very much alive. And the voice that is responsible for its revival belongs to Daniel Caesar. Only 21-years-old and claims to have been singing for as long as he can remember, the Toronto native took his dreams into his own hands and started to take things more seriously when he graduated high school. According to Complex magazine, shortly after this Caesar met some big names in the scene, and began to work on his first EP, Praise Break. His music focuses on themes of love, the millennial generation, and religion—something that played a large role in his upbringing.

I had taken to social media asking what was hot on the music scene, after completely being over the Beyonce and Rihanna hype and a few people mentioned him out of all of the newest talent to hit the scene. I was skeptical because as an artist myself I tend to be rather picky about the music I lend my ear to. It messes up my spirit when music is trash only because I feel like I know what it could sound like. I come from the Anita Baker and Brandy era so my ears are very sensitive to the trash people are referring to as “music” these days. I went out on a limb and downloaded Freudian, Caesars album and was completely blown away. The chill bumps from his runs made the hair on the back of my neck stand and I knew then that I had been introduced to a gem.

The album has features from other new artists that are also beautifully talented such as H.E.R and Syd whose albums I was also intrigued to listen to. The song that made me want to fall in love all over again is Best Part. It’s a bit of a slow ballad about love and how “if you love someone you oughta say something.” I have personally deemed it to be the song my husband and I will have our first dance to. If I had to describe it, I’d have to say it’s that moment you finally get home and fall into the arms of the person you love and they wrap you in their embrace. That emotion you get, that loving security is this song. I played it for my guy who’s a lot more into music of the soul than I knew and he agreed that it is indeed a beautiful piece. H.E.R. being on the song with him was magic. She has just the right amount of range and vocal control to ride the chords of the guitar strumming the song to the perfect end. “You’re my coffee that I need in the morning”, “You’re the Tylenol I take when my head hurts”, and “If life is a movie, you’re the best part” have to be the most beautiful and vulnerable descriptions of love I’ve ever heard.

Daniel Caesar is the next big thing, currently nominated for 2 Grammy’s. He is the anecdote music needs right now. Get Freudian today!

With Love,
Storie Stone
