When you don’t dress like everyone else… you don’t think like everyone else” – Iris Apfel

I don’t know about you, but I hate looking like everyone else. I like to stand out and be one of a kind and one person that is constantly standing out is Iris Apfel.

Iris Apfel is famously known for her big bright eyes that are hidden behind her even bigger glasses. She is a fashion icon, interior designer and business woman, but most importantly she is the ultimate vintage queen. This woman has traveled all over the world to find unique items (both old and new) and bargained to get every last one of them. Iris has collected so many pieces that she has had to remove some of them from her home to apartments that she uses as storage units. Her favorite items to collect are accessories and she wears them in the most fascinating ways. She layers tons of necklaces and bracelets and creates statement pieces that add an element of excitement to any outfit she chooses to wear. She is truly an inspiration because she can pair the most unlikely items and make them look absolutely amazing. Iris goes against the fashion industry and she sets her own trends. Her personal style is EPIC and I’m not sure if any of the top fashion designers could even come close to imitating it.  The now 95 year old is still on top of her game.  You can catch her being interviewed, at fashion events, and even on some college campuses. I can keep bragging about her, but if you want to learn more about the EYE OF IRIS there is a documentary about her life called “IRIS” on Netflix. I suggest that every fashionista watch it 🙂

I have tried to take the openness that Iris has an apply it to my own wardrobe. Honestly, I believe fashion is about being creative. I feel like there are no standards or rules when it comes to someone’s personal style. I always aim to slay, but I want to slay differently than others.

My best friend introduced me to vintage shopping. We went to a local Good Will and at first all I could think was WTF. It was dark, cold, and you could smell the dust in the air. There were tons of bins filled with clothes, shoes, purses, and belts….you name it they had it. I was so bourgeois and I felt like I was too good to be digging through old clothes. I was going through these bins with one hand and covering my nose with the other. I didn’t give not one item I picked up that day a chance. I just couldn’t understand how my best friend could do this every weekend and find her entire wardrobe. A couple weeks later we tried again. I opened myself up visually and dug through each bin until I reached the bottom. I left with three bags full of items and that’s when I knew I had an eye for it.

A lot of people always ask me how I find certain items when I’m vintage shopping. They always say they cannot find anything or ask how did I come across such unique items. Well it’s simple …you have to have the eye for it. You have to see the potential in a certain item and you have to be able to visualize what you can pair with this item. As I stated before I was not always this attentive when it came to vintage shopping. I had to train myself to be open to anything. You have to really open your eyes and see the true beauty behind an old item. I  always think about how I can wear something, what colors I can pair with this item, how I can layer it, what shoes I can wear, and what jewelry can be added to accompany the outfit.

I want more people to know that you can look like a million bucks and not have to actually pay a million bucks. lol Next time you go shopping, it wouldn’t hurt to take a detour to your local thrift store.

I am a 25 year old from 219, Indiana. I love shopping for pieces that are different and that I know nobody else will have! But one thing I hate about shopping is going broke doing so. Throughout the years of me working in retail, I have picked up a lot of tips and tricks for saving LOTS of money when shopping. I also go against trends by Vintage shopping. I find pieces that I can pair together to create works of art. You can call me a penny pincher, but I'll look BOMB while pinching my pennies :)
