Why I Don’t Use Social Media

I am a senior in high school and I am a rare case.

I promise this isn’t the “I’m special because I’m different” speech you’ll hear from most people, who, like me, don’t use social media. The difference is, I’m not protesting anything or making a statement, I just never got into it. I mean, sure there are some days where I wish I had a Snapchat to know what everyone was up to, but I’ll always find out whatever the news is eventually. I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything. If something is trending on Twitter or Instagram, a news site will write about it.

I feel like I’d waste too much time if I used social media. Knowing me, I’d spend hours on Twitter alone trying to have a say in every conversation about every topic. I’m a passionate person and once I start typing, there’s no telling when I’ll stop. People mocked the 280 character limit on Twitter, but honestly that’s not enough for me.

But I guess the biggest thing is, I don’t go out very often. Due to parental limitations, I can’t do everything my friends do and quite frankly, it’s a little depressing watching them have fun doing things I wasn’t even invited to. I guess you could say social media makes me a little bitter and jealous, but ultimately, I’m better off without it.

Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against social media. I think it’s a great way to communicate and spread social awareness, despite the consequences it has on the self-esteem of the public. And I’m not completely out of it. I have a Tumblr I never use. And Wattpad to read the occasional terrible story.

And that’s more than enough for me.
