The latest story of Kim Kardashian West hiring a surrogate to carry her third child has the internet going crazy. It’s been a world of different opinions surrounding the choice, people wondering why, how much the family paid her and if she’s allowed to be in the life of the child she carried. With the Kardashian’s being such a close knit family, it was a very difficult and ultimately life threatening decision to move forward with the choice to bring someone in and allow them the young lady to be so close.

Upon the desire to expand her family Kim decided on a surrogate after doctors warned her about the health risk if her attempting to carry another child. Kardashian suffered a rare condition called Placenta Accreta during her last pregancy. Placenta Accreta is a condition in which the placenta grows into the wall of the womb and prevents it from easily detaching at the time of birth. “Approximately 1 in 2,500 pregnancies experience placenta accreta, increta or percreta. The specific cause of placenta accreta is unknown, but it can be related to placenta previa and previous cesarean deliveries. Placenta accreta is present in 5% to 10% of women with placenta previa.

A cesarean delivery increases the possibility of a future placenta accreta, and the more cesareans, the greater the increase. Multiple cesareans were present in over 60% of placenta accreta cases.”(APA) After a second opinion from a trusted doctor, Kim came to the conclusion that another preganancy could potentially be fatal. Sources close to the family informed multiple blog sites that Kim went so far as to speak to another family that utlized a surrogate mother for tips on how to refrain from treating the child she didn’t carry with any less love than she does her others. The Kardashian surrogate is due in January and she has allegedly not been invited to the baby shower for fear of confusing the children.

Surrogate mothers can make anywhere from $50,000 and up for volunteering their womb to another family that lacks the natural capabilities. It’s not a very common thing in Hollywood, but some seem to understand the beauty in the option. With the way that the technology is constantly evolving in the medicinal field, it is not likely that the surrogates won’t become a very large part of the birthing process. In most recent surrogate history, over the years, surrogacy has become a much more popular process and procedure than it was just a few decades ago. In fact, over the past dozen years, certain events have taken place that have made surrogacy history. For example, in 2001 the oldest surrogate mother at that time gave birth to her own grandchild, while in 2005, a 58-year old surrogate mother gave birth to her own twin granddaughters. (MFSC) This world is consistenly changing and more people are taking action to expand their families. After visiting the website for the Modern Family Surrogacy Center, I was enlightened by all of the information listed that went all the way back the 70’s giving praise to the women that have sacrificied their wombs, body, time, emotions and everything else it takes. Women in the olden days protested surrogacy after the first successful surrogate mother found herself too attached to the child after earning her $10,000 and was later reluctant about giving the child to it’s rightful family after a successful birth. The woman exclaimed how the decision ruined her life and those around her, putting it out into the media that women who can’t have children should basically just deal with it.

Would you hire a surrogate?

We’ll chat.
